PART III - SYARIAH COURTS
Section 48. Jurisdiction of Syariah Subordinate Court.
(1) The Syariah Subordinate Court shall have jurisdiction within the local limits of jurisdiction assigned to it and shall be presided over by a Syariah Subordinate Court Judge.
(2) The Syariah Subordinate Court shall-
(a) in its criminal jurisdiction, try any offence committed by a Muslim under this Enactment or any other written law which confers the Syariah Courts jurisdiction to try any offence for which the maximum punishment provided does not exceed three thousand ringgit or imprisonment for a term not exceeding two years or both; and
(b) in its civil (mal) jurisdiction, hear and determine all such actions and proceedings as the Syariah Subordinate Court is authorised to hear and determine in which the amount or value of the subject-matter in dispute does not exceed one hundred thousand ringgit or is not capable of quantification in monetary terms.
(3) His Royal Highness the Sultan may from time to time by notification in the Gazette extend the jurisdiction of the Syariah Subordinate Court.
