A Malaysian citizen who is a Muslim may be admitted to be a Peguam Syarie if he-
(a) (i) has attained the age of twenty-one years;
(ii) is of good behaviour and has not been convicted by any competent Court in Malaysia or in any other country on any criminal offence under any written law;
(iii) is not a bankrupt; and
(iv) has passed the interview or the written examination or both, as the case may require; and
(b) is in possession of Bachelor of Syariyah or equivalent thereof from any University or any higher educational institution recognized by the Government of Malaysia and-
(i) Diploma in Law and Administration of Islamic Judiciary from the International Islamic University of Malaysia; or
(ii) Diploma of Islamic Judicial Administration and Legal Profession from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia; or
(iii) any Diploma equivalent to the Diploma referred to in subparagraph (i) and (ii) from any University or any higher educational institution recognized by the Government of Malaysia; or
(c) being an advocate and solicitor enrolled under the Legal Profession Act 1976 and possesses Diploma in Syariah Law and Practice from the Islamic International University of Malaysia or equivalent thereof from any University or higher educational institution recognized by the Government of Malaysia; or
(d) is a Government Legal Officer who is serving the Government; or
(e) has been appointed as a Peguam Syarie by any State religious authority in Malaysia; or
(f) is a Syariah Legal Officer or Legal Assistant of the Legal Aid Bureau in the State of Perak; or
(g) has served as Pegawai Hal Ehwal Islam with the State Government of Perak for a term of not less than five years; or
(h) has resigned his office or has opted for retirement or has retired on compulsory basis and has previously served for a term of not less than five years as Pegawai Syariah or Pegawai Hal Ehwal Islam with the Federal Government or any State Government in Malaysia.
